Client Devices

Introduction

Inputs to the Flowfal system come from phone and smartwatch devices running the Flowfal App.

On your phone download the Flowfal client using these download buttons, or open the AppStore or Google Play on your phone and search for "Flowfal".

The following devices are currently supported:

  • Apple iPhones running iOS 11.0 or later
  • Apple Watches running WatchOS 8.0 or later
  • Android phones running Android 5.0 or later
  • Android Wear OS watches running Android 6.0 or later

There is more information on installing and running the app on Apple Watch devices here .

Main Screen

This screen, once connected to a Flowfal server, will give the user a set of channel names they can select. The sound names displayed in this screen are controlled by the names set up in the FlowfalMaster plugin in the Ableton Set.

If there is more than one device connected to the system each channel can only be selected by one user at a time. Channels that are already selected by another Flowfal client device will be greyed out.

Lock To Channel

This menu setting allows the user to switch lock mode on and off. When in lock mode the app will always start up locked to a given channel. This is useful for performances where given performers need to be assigned a single channel number, and you want to prevent different channels being selected.

Press the Up and Down buttons to change the channel the app should lock to, or to select that lock mode is off.

For more information see Locking The Device Channel.

Orientation

This menu only appears on Wear OS devices currently.

By default, the watch will use the left or right-handed orientation set for the watch and the Use Default button will be enabled.

Press the Use Default to disable the default, and you will be able to specify how many degrees the watch is rotated. Generally, you will want to leave the rotation setting to zero degrees. This is useful for when watches are put into wands or other situations where watches are not being worn on a wrist.

Connection Latency

This menu setting measures the average time it takes (in milliseconds) to send data from the phone to the Flowfal server. The phone or watch needs to be connected to a Flowfal server for this screen to work.

For performances a latency value of 10ms or lower is ideal since this makes the audio response to movement effectively instantaneous as far as the user is concerned.

10ms latency is easily achievable with Flowfal, even using inexpensive WiFi access points. See the WiFi page for details on how to set up WiFi access points.
